Dr. P.K. Newby, Founder
TLP builds community and connection among its members by providing a place where individuals from all walks of life can join together in creating art. Everyone is welcome to participate in The Longwood Players, onstage or off, and we value diversity with regards to such factors as age, race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Whoever you are, however you live and love, you are welcome here.
TLP enriches communities culturally by providing the opportunity to attend high quality, affordable theatrical productions. We strive to maintain reasonable ticket prices, and offer free-of-charge tickets when possible, such that individuals of any income are able to enjoy our productions.
In addition to our two core values, a founding principle of The Longwood Players was to donate a portion of our profits to other nonprofit charitable organizations whose mission and values fit with our own, as appropriate to each theatre season. We hope to revive this tradition in coming years.
The Longwood Players has grown tremendously in the past 25 years, from a humble student organization founded while completing my doctoral work at Harvard's Longwood medical campus (hence the name) to a thriving nonprofit company that continues to produce theater, one show at a time.
While many theatre groups were forced to close their curtains for the last time during the coronavirus pandemic, "TLP" (as it is now affectionately known) played on, albeit with a limited season and show cancellations as our members and communities struggled to survive.
Thus it is with great humility, and deep gratitude, that we approach the coming year. We are slowly regaining our footing in a post-covid world and look, with hope, to the future. At the same time, we also recommit to our company's core values of community development, cultural enrichment, and philanthropic partnerships that are at the root of all we do.
Do you want more theatre in your life, whether onstage or offstage? If so, you're not alone -- so do we! That's why we are taking or 25th season as a time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones as we redefine who and what we are as a contemporary theatre company in the 21st century. We're particularly keen to meet those looking to fill leadership roles, including officers and production staff, who are integral for our success. If this sounds like you, please email us and join us in creating theatre.
No matter where your interest in theater lies, I personally thank you for taking the time to read this note, and for visiting us virtually. Please do subscribe to our mailing list, below, so we can keep in touch when our curtains next rise.
Until then,
Dr. P.K. Newby
